Student Organizations Merge

Currently, three separate computer oriented student organizations exist: Linux Users Group, Computer Science Club, and Student ACM Chapter. The Linux Users group began about 2.5 years ago and had a strong following in the fall semester. The Computer Science Club was founded 3 years ago, under Microsoft sponsorship; over time the club has died out. Currently there is no elected board or official membership following. Lastly, the Student ACM Chapter was revitalized this fall with a few start-up activities. All of these organizations share a similar mission of providing a venue for computer science/engineering related topics.

In the interest of maintaining a strong following, it has been decided (by members of the MULUG and ACM executive boards) the best course of action is a merging of the three organizations, under the Student ACM Chapter name. This merger allows for more frequent events, a greater diversity of topics, and a strong membership base. The organization will officially have two advisors: Dr. Praveen in COSC and Dr. Povinelli in COEN/EECE; Dr. Brylow will maintain an important contact, but no longer assume a primary advisor role. Efforts are being made to merge the clubs' mailing lists and convert the already existing MULUG wiki into a Student ACM Chapter wiki. In addition, official club registrations are being updated/terminated with the Office of Student Development. Elections for a new Student ACM Chapter executive board will be held in March.
